The Hats Wear
There is so much more to each of us than what the world chooses to see. We are not just one role, one label, or one version of ourselves. We all wear many different hats (so to speak) — some that we embrace with pride and joy, and others we wear only when needed. Each of us, complex, layered, and infinitely more than what meets the eye.

The Hats We Wear
We will wear many hats in our lives.
Some we will choose for ourselves.
And some, will be chosen for us, by others.
Some of these hats will fit snuggly, warmly, like they were designed just for us. These hats are where we find joy, where our passions are ignited and where we feel most connected.
Some hats however will feel uncomfortable, they won’t quite align, and no matter how much we adjust them they just never sit properly. But these hats are the ones that help us grow, they stretch us and as uncomfortable as they are, it’s just as necessary to wear them.
Ten years ago, when death stood before me with its arm outstretched, of all the hats that I have worn in my life, only one came into my vision.
It’s my favourite hat. It’s a hat that I wear proudly, it’s a hat that I am fully committed to and it’s a hat that I will never take off.
It’s the hat of motherhood.
For you see this hat is my purpose. It brings meaning to my life, it is where I find peace, and where I find contentment.
Another thing I love about this hat, is all the mini hats, I get to wear underneath it.
I get to be a comedian, my kids think I’m hilarious by the way, I get to be a teacher, a nurse, a guide and mentor, a friend and confidant, and for a really short period, I get to be a living god, a being that magically makes things happen, the centre of their universe. Oh, how I miss those days.
There is another hat that I wear just as proudly, but unlike motherhood it is not received well by others.
It’s not a hat that I wear often, but it is one that I carry with me every day, everywhere I go. It sits in my arms patiently waiting, quietly watching, hoping that it never has to be worn.
Because when I wear it, sparks tend to fly, and stern words are spoken. In fact, wearing this hat tends to make me extremely unpopular.
It’s a hat that we all have in our closet, and like me, most people will carry it with them, but a lot struggle with placing it on their head when the occasion calls for it, because they know that wearing it comes with a price.
For this hat acts as a mirror, it holds people accountable and speaks for the injured. It calls out injustice and demands restitution.
Every time I have worn this hat, others have tried to knock it from my head, forcing me to instead wear hats that they feel better suit. The hat of a meddler, the hat of a troublemaker, the hat of a tattletale. So, in the end the only hats the world sees are those that were forced upon me, and the world shuns and rejects me for them.
That is the cost of wearing this hat.
So, if this hat is so problematic that is causes so much discomfort to both myself, and others, why would I be proud to wear it?
This hat helps me sleep at night; this hat keeps my conscience clear.
And because every time I have worn this hat, balance was restored, and justice prevailed. Despite the cost, I will never regret wearing this hat.
For you see it is the hat of a justice seeker.
We will wear many hats in our lives, some will make us popular, and some not so, some will be worn on the surface for everyone to see and some will be invisible, some we will choose for ourselves, and some will be chosen for us by others.
So, what hats do you wear?
